Prof. Jie Zhang is the Founder and Chairman of GeoTomo, an oil and gas exploration
company with global operations. He has also founded several other high-tech companies in five industries in the US with multi-country operations.

Prof. Jie Zhang received his Ph.D. in Geophysics from MIT in 1996, M.S. in Geophysics from Penn State in 1991, and B.S. in Geophysics from USTC in 1986. He previously worked for MIT, Shell, USGS, and Blackhawk Geometrics. The companies that he founded include GeoTomo in Houston, Texas, USA; Miles Medical in San Jose, California, USA, a healthcare device company; Cello Therapeutics Inc. in San Diego, California, USA, a biotech company producing nanomedicines for cancer treatment, and several others.

From 2009, Prof. Jie Zhang was teaching geophysics at MIT as a lecturing professor, then at Stanford as a visiting professor, and joined USTC in 2011. He is the Founding Director of Stanford-USTC-MIT (SUM) Joint Program. Currently he is leading seven R&D groups in the field of geophysical imaging, earthquake monitoring, artificial intelligence, computer hardware, medical imaging, and biotech in academia and industry.

Prof. Jie Zhang received Antarctic Exploration Award from US NSF in 1996, Reginald Fessenden Award in 2012 and Outstanding Educator Award in 2015 both from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and SEG Honorary Lecturer Award in 2016. He was ranked No. 1 among 100 China Most Creative People in 2015 by the US magazine “Fast Company.” He has been serving in the MIT EAPS Visiting Committee since 2011, and became first Vice President of SEG in 2016. He has published 130 papers in science and technology.
