Strategic Risk-Taking Behavior and Its Effect on Startup Performance

L. Lin Ong, Melati Nungsari, and Charu Agarwal

Strategic risk-taking behavior is widely recognized as a defining characteristic of entrepreneurial activity and a critical driver of startup performance. In environments marked by uncertainty, rapid technological change, and intense competition, startups are often compelled to make decisions that involve significant levels of risk. These decisions may relate to financial investments, market entry timing, innovation choices, human resource commitments, and strategic positioning. While risk-taking can expose startups to failure, it can also create opportunities for superior performance, competitive advantage, and long-term growth.
