BIOGRAPHY
Mukhtar Malik Hussain retired from HSBC in 2021 following a career spanning 39 years at HSBC. He served in multiple senior roles across Europe, Middle East and Asia rising from a Graduate trainee to a Group General Manager. During this period he was at the forefront of driving and delivering on both regional and global initiatives. This culminated in being appointed as Head of the Belt and Road Initiative in Hong Kong and also in charge of Business Corridors.
Mukhtar started his career in London as a Merchant Banker and moved to the Middle East in 1993 to establish a wholesale Banking platform for HSBC in the region. It was the first international institution to do so and drove market innovation across multiple asset classes. He rose to the position of Deputy Chairman of HSBC Middle East and also served as a Board member for HSBC Saudi Arabia. In 2010 he was posted to run HSBCs operations in Malaysia. During his period as CEO the Bank underwent substantial change and challenge which was successfully navigated. He served as CEO and Chairman/Deputy Chair of the Board. He also drove the establishment of HSBC Amanah in Malaysia. He served as Chairman of HSBC Singapore during a period of strategic change and investment for the business.
Mukhtar served in London as a Global Co-Head for Banking and Head of Principal Investments during the GFC, navigating through the challenges this bought. Since his retirement in 2021, Mukhtar established Montague Advisory Partners which is a strategic advisory practice focused on Asia Middle East trade and investment flows. Mukhtar currently serves on the ASB Board of Governors and is Chair of the Deans Presidential Advisory Committee.
