Senior Research Associate

Reports to: Associate Professor

Job Purpose

The Senior Research Associate (SRA) is a core member of the ASB Center for Technology, Strategy and Sustainability (CTSS), a leading research hub dedicated to advancing knowledge on business strategies, technological transformation, and the socio-political dynamics of emerging markets.

The SRA plays a leadership role in conducting, publishing, and disseminating scientifically rigorous and impactful research. The position involves managing research projects, mentoring junior staff, engaging with policymakers and industry stakeholders, and building CTSS’s visibility as a knowledge leader.

CTSS’s current research themes include:

    • Decarbonization: renewable energy transition, carbon markets, and hard-to-abate
      sectors.
    • Advanced technologies: artificial intelligence, high-technology manufacturing, and R&D ecosystems.
    • Geographic focus: Malaysia and Southeast Asia, with comparative perspectives across other emerging markets.
Key Responsibilities

Research & Publication

  • Lead and contribute to CTSS research projects from conceptualization to publication (proposal development, literature review, data collection, analysis, writing, and dissemination).
  • Initiate and deliver a personal research project annually, aligned with CTSS’s themes, with the goal of publication in peer-reviewed outlets or policy platforms.
  • Ensure research outputs meet international standards of scientific rigor and relevance

Engagement & Dissemination

  • Organize and lead CTSS workshops, seminars, symposia, and public events to promote dialogue and knowledge-sharing.
  • Translate research findings into accessible outputs (policy briefs, op eds, presentations) for academic, policymaking, and industry audiences.
  • Strengthen CTSS’s visibility by actively promoting its research through conferences, publications, and media outreach.

Collaboration & Mentorship

  • Supervise and mentor Research Associates and Junior Research Associates, providing guidance on research methods, writing, and career development.
  • Foster collaboration with visiting scholars, research fellows, and faculty affiliates to expand CTSS’s network and impact.
  • Represent CTSS in external academic and policy networks, building strategic partnerships locally and internationally.

Center Development & Administration

  • Contribute to strategic planning, fundraising, and grant-writing efforts to support CTSS’s long-term sustainability.
  • Support general center operations, including reporting, budgeting, and administrative tasks, as needed.
Minimum Qualification and Skills Required
  • Education: Master’s degree (or higher) in Social Sciences, Economics, Political Science, Public Policy, Business, Environmental Studies, or a related field. Candidates with strong professional experience in think tanks, international organizations, or policy research centers are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience: Minimum 3 years of research-related experience, with demonstrated ability to manage and publish research projects.
  • Skills & Competencies:
    • Strong research design, data collection, and analysis skills (qualitative and/or quantitative).
    • Proven ability to write and publish in English for both academic and non academic audiences.
    • Fluency in English required; working proficiency in Malay (spoken and written) preferred.
    • Strong organizational and project management skills, with ability to deliver outputs on time.
    • Capacity to work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
    • Ability to engage with diverse stakeholders, including policymakers, private sector actors, and civil society.
