Overview

Behind every business strategy lies a story told through numbers. This course offers a practical and engaging introduction to financial accounting, equipping participants with the tools to read, interpret, and analyze financial statements with confidence.

Over five interactive modules, you will explore core accounting principles, apply them to real-world business scenarios, and learn how financial information supports better decision-making — from managing performance to identifying red flags in an AI-driven business landscape.

Through a combination of videos, quizzes and real-world case discussions in our live sessions together, you will learn the following:

  1. Foundations of Financial Accounting
    Understand key accounting terms and assumptions, and learn how to read the three major financial statements — Balance Sheet, Income Statement, and Cash Flow Statement — with confidence.
  2. Business Transactions and Reporting
    Learn how firms recognize revenue, match expenses, and value inventory and assets. Practice recording real transactions using journal entries and understand how these shape the financial statements.
  3. Intangibles, Investments & Cash Flows
    Explore the accounting treatment of goodwill, securities, and cash flows. Build and interpret a full cash flow statement and understand how business activities are reflected in financial reports.
  4. Liabilities and Equity Explained
    Dive into how companies finance their operations. Learn to account for long-term debt, leases, and equity — and understand how capital structure decisions affect the balance sheet.
  5. Ratios, Red Flags & Financial Health
    Use financial ratios to assess liquidity, profitability, and solvency. Compare companies across industries and uncover warning signs of questionable accounting practices in today’s fast-moving, AI-enhanced business world.

  4. Analyze financial statements from the perspective of different stakeholders.
  5. Interpret key financial ratios such as liquidity, profitability, and solvency ratios.

  7. Explain why financial ratios differ across industries.
  8. Detect accounting red flags.

Participants are expected to view relevant videos before each live session, with reminders provided in advance.

Class Structure

Video Learning

Before the live sessions, you will watch short video lectures lasting 20 to 40 minutes and complete assignments to cement your understanding of the videos.

Live Sessions

The live sessions are held in hybrid format, beginning with a review of the video lecture and followed by a discussion of the case of the day.

The course is delivered over a period of 11 weeks (this includes time for learners to watch videos before the first live session)
