CSS Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)
Contribution of CSS to SDG

SDG 2 and SDG 15 are at the heart of the P&G Smallholders Program at the Center for Sustainable Small-owners or CSS

SDG 2: END HUNGER, ACHIEVE FOOD SECURITY AND IMPROVED NUTRITION AND PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE

CSS is directly contributing to SDG targets 2.3 & 2.4

SDG 2.3 states – By 2030, double the agricultural productivity and incomes of small-scale food producers, in particular women, indigenous peoples, family farmers, pastoralists and fishers, including through secure and equal access to land, other productive resources and inputs, knowledge, financial services, markets and opportunities for value addition and non-farm employment.

Through its Livelihood Improvement program, CSS aims to increase the yield per hectare, increasing the average household income for the Independent smallholders for oil palm. CSS has a goal of 250 learning farms to create a diffusion of good agricultural practices in the community at large.

SDG 2.4 states – By 2030, ensure sustainable food production systems and implement resilient agricultural practices that increase productivity and production, that help maintain ecosystems, that strengthen capacity for adaptation to climate change, extreme weather, drought, flooding and other disasters and that progressively improve land and soil quality.

Through its traceability and certification initiatives, CSS is enabling the smallholder farmers to conform to the RSPO certification standards, complying with local laws and contributing to certified sustainable production of oil palm.

SDG 15: PROTECT, RESTORE AND PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE USE OF TERRESTRIAL ECOSYSTEMS, SUSTAINABLY MANAGE FORESTS, COMBAT DESERTIFICATION, AND HALT AND REVERSE LAND DEGRADATION AND HALT BIODIVERSITY LOSS

CSS is directly contributing to SDG targets 15.1, 15.2 & 15.3

SDG 15.1 states – By 2020, ensure the conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems and their services, in particular forests, wetlands, mountains and drylands, in line with obligations under international agreements.

CSS has sponsored and facilitated creation PERTANIAGA an independent smallholder farmer association that acquired RSPO membership in 2020. The PERTANIGA farmers will implement the latest RSPO Independent Smallholder Standard or RISS, conforming to HCV and HCS assessments ensuring conservation, restoration and sustainable use of terrestrial and inland freshwater ecosystems. It works to ensure that its supply for oil palm is not based on new plantations on peatlands.

SDG 15.2 states – By 2020, promote the implementation of sustainable management of all types of forests, halt deforestation, restore degraded forests and substantially increase afforestation and reforestation globally.

Through its implementation of External Supplier Sourcing Checklist and tracing the source of supply to the Collection Center and farms, CSS aims to identify, isolate and halt any deforestation for oil palm. Through its Yield Intensification initiative the farmers are motivated to increase their yield on existing farmlands than plant new ones.

SDG 15.3 states – By 2030, combat desertification, restore degraded land and soil, including land affected by desertification, drought and floods, and strive to achieve a land degradation-neutral world.

CSS facilitates and implements an NDPE policy that ensures no deforestation, no new plantation on peatlands and no exploitation in the supply chain.

In addition to these 2 SDGs as its core objectives, CSS also provides for 3 SDGs as its primary objectives viz.

SDG 10 – Reduce Inequalities by contributing towards the indicators for SDG 10.1
SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production by contributing towards the indicators for SDG 12.2, 12.4 and 12.8
SDG 17 – Partnership for Goals by contributing towards the indicators for SDG 17.16 and 17.17

And 2 SDGs as its secondary objectives viz.

SDG 5 – Gender Equality by contributing towards the indicators for SDG 5.1
SDG 8 – decent work and Economic Growth contributing towards the indicators for SDG 8.7 and 8.8
