Launch of The Tun Ismail Ali Center of Excellence (TIACOE)

On August 14, 2025, the Tun Ismail Ali Center of Excellence (TIACOE), endowed by Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), held its launch event with remarks from special guests Tan Sri Dr. Zeti Aziz (Founding Chair and Co-Chair of the ASB Board of Governors, and former Governor of BNM) and Dato’ Sri Abdul Rasheed Ghaffour (Governor of BNM), alongside a keynote lecture by Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences laureate Professor Robert C. Merton on financial innovations.

The Tun Ismail Ali Center of Excellence serves as a research hub for policymakers, scholars, and students, spearheading research on financial and monetary economics.

ARC-TalentCorp Launch of Youth Mobility: A Preview of the ASEAN Compendium Study

On July 28, 2025, the ASEAN Research Center in collaboration with TalentCorp Malaysia held the preliminary launch of Youth Mobility: A Preview of the ASEAN Compendium Study.

This ongoing six-month study explores cross-border labor mobility in ASEAN, with a focus on internships and work placements for young graduates. Interviews have been conducted across the region with stakeholders including universities, government agencies, businesses, and students.

The launch featured a panel session titled “Breaking Barriers: Realising ASEAN’s Youth Mobility Vision,” and the final report will be released at the end of the year, highlighting key findings and recommendations.

ARC-UNHCR Conference on Refugee Studies and Forced Displacement 2025

On June 11 and 12, 2025, the ASEAN Research Center (ARC) at the Asia School of Business (ASB) hosted the ASB-UNHCR Conference on Refugee Studies and Forced Displacement 2025. Held in partnership with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, this annual event focuses on sharing and expanding scholarly work related to refugee issues and forced displacement.

The 2025 edition emphasized turning academic insights into practical impact by featuring community-driven projects and capacity-building workshops. The goal was to promote collaboration and knowledge exchange among researchers, policymakers, civil society groups, refugee communities, and the wider public.

ASB-KRI Professor Guy Standing: Rentier Capitalism, Stagnation and The Precariat

On June 19, 2025, Khazanah Research Institute (KRI), in collaboration with the ASB Research Office, had the privilege of hosting acclaimed economist Professor Guy Standing for a seminar titled “Rentier Capitalism, Stagnation and the Precariat.”

A leading voice on inequality and labour rights, Professor Standing drew on decades of scholarship and global policy experience. The seminar concluded with an insightful dialogue between Professor Guy Standing, Professor Melati Nungsari (Deputy CEO, Deputy Dean of Research and Academics, ASB), and Professor Jomo Kwame Sundaram (Research Advisor, KRI), delving into the intersections between rentierism, policy stagnation, and the urgent need for systemic change.
