Research Associate, CTSS
Reports to: Senior Research Associate
Job Purpose
The Research Associate (RA) is a key member of the ASB Center for Technology, Strategy and Sustainability (CTSS), a leading research center dedicated to advancing understanding of business strategy, technology, and the socio-political dynamics of emerging markets. The RA supports the design, execution, and dissemination of scientifically rigorous and impactful research, contributing to both institutional projects and individual research initiatives. The role provides opportunities for professional growth in research design, writing, stakeholder engagement, and project management, within an interdisciplinary and international research environment.
CTSS’s current research focuses on:
- Decarbonization: renewable energy transition, carbon markets, and hard-to-abate sectors.
- Advanced technologies: artificial intelligence, high-technology manufacturing, and R&D ecosystems.
- Geographic focus: Malaysia and Southeast Asia, with comparative research on other emerging economies.
Key Responsibilities
- Research & Project Support
- Assist in the implementation of CTSS’s research projects from start to finish, including literature review, data collection, data analysis, and drafting of reports, papers, and other outputs. •
- Contribute to research proposals, concept notes, and presentations under the guidance of senior researchers.
- Undertake an individual research project annually (with approval and mentorship) and aim for publication in a suitable outlet.
- Maintain high standards of academic integrity, documentation, and data management.
- Engagement & Dissemination
- Support the organization of CTSS research activities and events, including workshops, seminars, symposia, and public dialogues.
- Assist in preparing research summaries, blog posts, policy briefs, and visual materials for dissemination to non-academic audiences.
- Engage with policymakers, private sector partners, and the broader public to promote CTSS’s research findings.
- Collaboration & Development
- Work collaboratively with faculty, senior researchers, and visiting scholars on multidisciplinary projects.
- Actively participate in internal capacity-building programs, such as CTSS training sessions, methodology workshops, and reading groups. •
- Contribute to building CTSS’s reputation and visibility through professional conduct and active participation in academic and policy discussions.
- Center Operations
- Provide logistical and administrative support for research activities, data collection, and events.
- Assist in maintaining project documentation, progress tracking, and reporting.
- Contribute to other CTSS initiatives as assigned by the leadership.
Minimum Qualifications & Skills
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Economics, Political Science, Public Policy, Business, Environmental Studies, or a related field. Outstanding fresh graduates are encouraged to apply.
- Experience: Prior research experience (academic or professional) is an advantage but not mandatory.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Basic knowledge of research methods (qualitative and/or quantitative) and data analysis tools.
- Strong writing and analytical skills, with the ability to synthesize complex ideas clearly.
- Good command of English (spoken and written); proficiency in Malay preferred.
- Ability and willingness to learn new research techniques, including data analysis software.
- Strong sense of responsibility, curiosity, and ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Interest in sustainability, technology, and policy issues in emerging markets.
