Action Learning

The thread that ties it together.

Between and through these competencies runs Action Learning, the ASB signature. Every period of classroom work is followed by a live project inside a real organisation, where all three competencies must operate simultaneously. This is the mechanism by which ASB is reshaping how business leaders are formed in Malaysia, across Asia, and increasingly worldwide. Not by teaching more, but by insisting that everything taught is immediately made real. Our collaboration with MIT Sloan sharpens that education.

Integrative Management: Sustainability Strategy

Read a complex global business case from every angle at once, then integrate those readings into one coherent set of actions.
Introduces the major perspectives used to understand general management in a complex, fast-changing global marketplace. Working with colleagues and faculty, you analyze a complex business case and then integrate those analyses into cohesive global action. Along the way, you reflect on the influence large organizations exert on contemporary society and begin developing your own approach to being a principled, innovative leader.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

Business Research Methods

Evidence-based management: how to ask a question, gather data, and know how much weight the answer can carry.
Every managerial decision is distinct, but a general way of thinking applies to all of them. That is evidence-based management: decisions and practices informed by the best available scientific evidence. You learn deductive and inductive reasoning, the difference between descriptive and causal questions, and how to collect, analyze, and interpret data systematically. Designed in conjunction with Action Learning, so discussion centers on your live projects.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

Operations Management

Operations excellence treated as a source of competitive advantage, not a back-office function.
Spans operations strategy, service management and quality, process analysis and innovation, capacity analysis, inventory management, postponement, production control, supply chain design and coordination, and operational risk. Case studies focus on formulating long-term operational strategy. The toolkit applies across consulting, general management, manufacturing, supply chain, product development, financial services, entrepreneurship, private equity, and healthcare.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

Quantitative Methods

The quantitative floor beneath everything else you will do at ASB.
Cements foundational mathematics — algebra, calculus, probability — and introduces optimization and regression, which you master more fully in Data, Models & Decisions. Throughout, you see how quantitative techniques turn apparently ambiguous problems into clearly defined, answerable questions.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

Managerial Economics

Supply, demand, market power, and the game theory of competing when your rivals are thinking too.
A working knowledge of the analytical tools bearing most directly on the economic decisions firms make regularly. Begins with supply and demand underlying the competitive model, which serves as a benchmark for evaluating other structures. Demand shapes pricing, marketing, and positioning; supply frames costs and investment. Moves to monopoly and oligopoly, then to strategic interaction through game theory.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

Data, Models & Decisions

Structure the decision before you solve it. Uncertainty made explicit rather than assumed away.
Introduces fundamental techniques for using data to make informed management decisions, focusing on ways of modelling and thinking structurally about decision problems. Emphasis on evaluating uncertainty explicitly, understanding the dynamic nature of decision-making, using historical and limited information effectively, simulating complex systems, and allocating resources optimally. The goal is to make you an intelligent user of management science, not a handler of equations.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

Organizational Behaviour

Leading people is likely the hardest thing you will do as a manager. This is the evidence base for it.
Provides a framework for increasing individual, group, and organizational performance; builds the leadership skills required to shape and manage behavior in organizations; and, through self-reflection, exercises, and homework, connects those concepts to practice. Ties concrete organizational situations, drawn from your own experience and from cases, to essential theory and effective management practice.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

Financial Accounting

Supply, demand, market power, and the game theory of competing when your rivals are thinking too.
An intensive introduction to preparing and interpreting financial information. Adopts a decision-maker perspective by emphasizing the relationship between accounting data and the underlying economic events that generate them. Sessions combine lectures and case discussions; assignments include textbook problems, financial statement analysis, and case studies.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

Valuation, capital structure, and where the money should actually go.
Focuses on the theories, tools, and techniques of financial decision-making. Topics include valuation, corporate bonds, capital structure, and capital allocation.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

Negotiations & Communications

Craft the message, hold the room, and find the outcome both sides can sign.
Develops advanced negotiation and communication skills for professional environments. An application-oriented course providing frameworks, tools, and techniques you can use immediately in class, at work, and on Action Learning projects. By the end, you can design and implement strategic negotiation and communication approaches tailored to different contexts, media, and audiences.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

Competitive Strategy

Why some firms earn more than others, and what a general manager can actually do about it.
General managers must understand and respond to factors that affect firm performance inside and outside the organization. Shows how the industry landscape and internal firm activities shape profitability and how managers position the firm to generate competitive advantage. Combines lectures, cases, in-class simulations, and experiments.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

Lean operations principles, applied on-site, inside a real company.

Describes the principles of operations management from a lean perspective through lectures and discussion, then provides hands-on experience applying those principles in a company. The course takes place primarily on-site.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

Marketing Management

Theory, cases, and then a concrete marketing plan of your own.
Emphasizes both marketing theory and practice. Lecture sessions introduce proven solutions to marketing problems, case sessions illustrate application across industries, and practice sessions give you the opportunity to develop a concrete marketing plan.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

Ethics and Corporate Responsibility

The grey-area decisions, examined through an economic, legal and ethical lens at once.
Encourages you to consider the grey-area decisions you will face as a manager, weighing stakeholders’ often divergent interests. Introduces a triple-lens framework — economic, legal, ethical. Addresses core dilemmas and classical approaches to ethics, and how you might live your personal values through your actions as a manager. Readings span case studies, moral and political philosophy, short stories, legal precedent, and current journalism.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

Business Dynamics at MIT Sloan

Three weeks in Cambridge as a visiting student, not a visitor.
Offerings change each year and are developed in collaboration with MIT Sloan rather than dictated by ASB. Previously offered courses have included AI in Finance, Platform Strategy, AI Applications, Climate Tech, FinTech & Financial Innovation, System Dynamics, Digital Product Management, and AI Strategy. When a course isn’t available at MIT Sloan, ASB will try to incorporate it into the ASB curriculum, sometimes as an elective.

Designed to help you learn more about your strengths and how to use them to manage your career. It draws on current research and practice, experiential exercises, case studies, and guest speakers to deepen your understanding of the forces that shape careers. An interdisciplinary team project with senior leadership, and a deliverable that has to hold up.
Collaborate with ASB Action Learning project partners on an intensive real-world engagement. Five goals: give you insight into the opportunities and problems companies face; structure an intensive real-world experience working with senior leadership; develop your skills in integrated problem framing; expose you to the cultures of Asia and the challenges of multicultural work; and let you apply the tools and frameworks from across the ASB curriculum. The team project is the centerpiece, and the deliverable must create value for the host company.

Descriptions are drawn from the ASB MBA Full-Time course catalogue and are subject to change.

An individual off-campus placement. The closest thing to trying a career on before you commit.
An individual off-campus action learning experience, for credit, that connects academic study to practical application in a professional work environment. It also offers the chance to try out a career while gaining relevant experience and professional connections. Completed under the guidance of a faculty member, the Action Learning Directors and team for stakeholder management and logistics, and an executive coach for professional advice.
