Emily Preiss

Senior Director of Admissions

How long have you been with ASB?

I joined ASB in November, 2015. So, at the time of writing this, I have been with ASB for nearly 4 years.

In one or two sentences tell us what you do? Or what your typical day looks like here?

I am the Senior Director of Admissions, which includes the full life-cycle of recruiting, evaluating and converting applicants into ASB students. The beauty of working in such a dynamic department such as admissions is that no day looks quite the same. I get to work with an amazing team, speak to interesting prospects, and travel all over the world.

What kind of project are you currently working on?

I am currently building out the application processes for new programs, including our MBA for Working Professionals, Master of Central Banking, as well as an MBA Early Admissions process.

What are you most proud of so far?

Our students! I was lucky enough to be a part of building the first-ever ASB MBA class, and every year, I am incredibly humbled by the amazing individuals who end up joining our school.

Can you tell me a little about the team you have been working with?

I am grateful for the colleagues I get to work closely with as part of ASB Admissions. We are a small, but growing team of passionate and diverse professionals who are dedicated to finding best in class talent for ASB.

What do you think is the most unique aspect of the company?

ASB’s diversity is extremely unique. I have worked in global companies in New York and London, and have never experienced the level of diversity that ASB offers. This diversity comes in many forms, be it the nationalities of our employees and students, their academic and professional backgrounds, or their interests and passions. Our hallways are a melting pot of different talents, mindsets, and experiences all coming together to work towards a unified vision to build the best school in Asia.

What makes you good at your job?

I like to think I approach my work with authenticity, dedication and with team-spirit.

What are the biggest rewards for working with ASB?

Opportunities to continuously learn something new, meet and work with such a diverse group of people…and of course, the opportunity to travel as part of my work is highly rewarding!

What are some challenges you face in your job, and how do you tackle them?

Everything we have built at ASB, we have done so from scratch. Such an environment certainly has it’s challenges, but with that comes autonomy, opportunities to learn and improve, and the satisfaction of knowing that you are helping to create a legacy in some way.

How do you think you can contribute to ASB’s growing success?

I hope to continue to help support ASB across a range of dimenions: Supporting the development of a portfolio of different degree programs and collaborating across departments and functions to help keep what is now a relatively large team, aligned with ASB’s core vision and milestones for success.

Please share us a brief about your functional area (Admissions), and how does it contribute to the overall growth of ASB

Admissions is responsible for building cohorts of new students for ASB’s programs. Our responsibilities have a large systems and operational component, but also touch digital marketing, recruitment, event management, evaluation of applications, and conversion of applicants to students. We are also a knowledge center for the organization, with a tremendous amount of market insight across a very competitive business management education landscape. As a by-product of our high-touch recruiting and admissions process, we build strong relationships with each batch of incoming students and are involved in the overall student and alumni experience at ASB.

What is the sentiment of potential prospects/students to pursue their studies with ASB and in Asia overall?

The general sentiment is that ASB offers something different from traditional business schools, in a format that allows for hands-on relevant experience in the fastest growing region of the world.

What do potential prospects/students expect from ASB as a B-School?

Incoming students expect an immersive and transformative education, an unparallelled experiential learning platform (Action Learning), with world-class professors, and a highly diverse classroom.

What is the impression achieved by ASB students currently among the highly established employers?

We are excited that our students have landed high impact roles with leading employers such as Amazon, Microsoft, Google, AirAsia, Didi, McKinsey etc.

What is your advice for people who would like to explore career opportunity in your field?

I never knew higher education admissions was a career path until I joined ASB. It has so much to offer, and I would recommend it to anyone seeking a strong mix of operations, sales and marketing, analytical reasoning, relationship building and travel.

What is your next goal to bring development to the department?

As we scale, we are looking at ways to organize the different functional areas of Admissions. We want to optimize and maximize the results of everything we do, while also allowing for learning and growth opportunities for our various team-members.
