Biography

David Schmittlein joined the MIT Sloan School of Management as John C Head III Dean and Professor of Marketing in October, 2007. He has focused on expanding MIT Sloan’s global visibility, worked with the faculty to create new high-quality mission-driven education programs, developed enhanced learning opportunities and experiences for current students, and invested to develop and disseminate business knowledge that has impact and will stand the test of time.

He has also reached out to the many members of MIT’s alumni community to gain their valuable insights on MIT Sloan and management education. Under his leadership, MIT Sloan has created international advisory boards, launched three new degree programs, expanded the size and prominence of the standing faculty, overseen the fully-funded completion of Sloan’s new campus, expanded diversity and developed programs to improve community and inclusion among faculty, staff and students, enhanced alumni engagement, and as a result seen annual fund giving increase by over 150 percent.

Prior to his appointment, he was the Ira A. Lipman Professor, and Professor of Marketing, at The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He served as Deputy Dean from 2000-2007 and Interim Dean during July, 2007. Dr. Schmittlein received a PhD. and M.Phil. in Business from Columbia University, and BA in Mathematics (magna cum laude) from Brown University. His research assesses marketing processes and develops methods for improving marketing decisions.

Dr. Schmittlein is widely regarded for his work estimating the impact of a firm’s marketing actions, designing market and survey research, and creating effective communication, promotion and interactive marketing strategies. Dr. Schmittlein has received awards for his research, his editorial work, and his teaching. He was an area editor for Marketing Science and a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Interactive Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, Marketing Letters and Marketing Science.

In addition to his role with the Asia School of Business Board of Governors, Dr. Schmittlein serves on the International Advisory Boards for, respectively, the Tsinghua School of Economics and Management, the Indian School of Business, and Fudan University School of Management.
